Editorial Reviews:

With her popular career counseling sessions, motivational speeches, workshops, and television specials, Barbara Sher has become famous for her extraordinary ability to help people define and achieve their life goals. Now she tackles a problem that millions of people face today in a universe of infinite possibilities.Sher identifies someone she calls The Scanner-someone who frequently has a multiplicity of interests, but finds it hard to create a successful life he or she loves because their passions and abilities are taking them in so many different directions. Sher identifies 7 types of Scanners-ranging from the Serial Specialist (someone who learns all about one subject, only to get bored and need to move on to the next) to Sybil (a person with so many areas of interest, she can+t finish a thing). Contrary to popular wisdom, Sher tells Scanners that theirs is a unique ability, not a liability. She also states that they must do everything they love, not zero in on one pursuit at the expense of all others. With dozens of powerful techniques Sher has developed to free people from -goal paralysis,+ readers will stop thinking of themselves as dabblers or dilettantes, and find innovative ways to live lives of variety, challenge, and joy.

Still reading this book, but so far it is excellent! I find myself nodding in agreement on most pages. It's always nice to know you're not nuts, or a slacker, or a commitment-phobe, etc. It's perfectly okay to have varied interests and even to pursue them all to the point where you are satisfied. That's been the biggest eye-opener for me so far. I don't have to learn all there is to know about everything I'm interested in. Just as much as I need to know. Wow!

"Refuse to Choose!" by Barbara Sher demystifies many modern believes, it comes as fresh water in a world in which we are made to believe that being specialist is the only way of achieving happiness, success, etc. Well written and fun to read.

Some people frequently find themselves in the dilemma about what is the best way to go, trying to decide between following the heart or the mind. Mrs. Sher tells the reader, directly and through stories, that there is no need to choose (as the title very clearly states). The argument is that by not choosing you are really leaving the life that you are meant to live. A life that is full of learning, changes and the type of excitement that a Scanner (the name she give to people with the desire of doing many things) needs. Mrs. Sher gives a lot of very good tools about how to capture your ideas, how to organize, and types of careers for Scanner, among many other tools. Some of these tools I have tried them myself (before reading the book), and even though some are common sense, they are extremely useful.

More important, this books makes you feel that being different and having many things that you like, want to learn or do, is perfectly fine! It helps you feel a connection with many other people that you do not know but go through similar things.

Okay, as with many of the "self-help" books some of the examples seem over simplified, as if once you know that you can teach for 6 months and travel for 6, it would happen. In other words, Scanner also need to compete with non-Scanners. So I would say this is a very good reference book, but then you'll need a book to help you focus in any other aspect of the are you want to get involved with. Use this book as a springboard or as a way of feel comfort, and then start the hard work and competition that even specialists have to go through.

An avid fan of "Wishcraft" (another of the author's books) and I'm asking even more serious questions while reading this book. Both books are not just books that you read, but books that DO. Exercises and questions that are profound. And with humor and compassion.

This book helped me realize that a lifetime trait of embracing a wide variety of interests was not necessarily negative. Although initially it was a little discouraging to see myself described so well in print, after the first shock I felt myself well armed to tackle the second half of my career.

The book does get a bit verbose in parts. Generally I just skipped those but the good parts are good enough that those questioning if they have a mild case of attention deficit disorder or are just "flighty, artistic types" will probably benefit from reading this title. The book also helped me come to terms with my day job solution for pursuing the artistic life, something I had previously felt guilty about. This book helped me realize that different types of minds need different types of solutions to operate at optimal creative efficiency.

This book has important information I have not found anywhere else.
